This catalogue, published in conjunction with a solo exhibition of Elise Ansel’s new works in 2021, explores the concept of ‘polarity’ within her paintings. Ansel reinterprets Old Master paintings into a contemporary pictorial language, often contradicting their intentions. The tension between these two poles charges her process of creation. The catalogue also features an essay by Alfred Mac Adam, an art critic and Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University, as well as studio shots that give an insight into the energetic gestural abstraction of Elise’s practice.
