Chiara Capellini is an Italian artist based in Milan. Her work explores the boundaries between perception, matter, and energy through a pictorial approach rooted in subtraction and the investigation of space and void. Her practice focuses on the transition between the mental image and its dissolution, evoking a moment of suspension in which the visible fades into the invisible.
Far from figurative representation, her painting technique is based on a process of removal and layering, where matter is applied, removed, and redefined to create depth with minimal elements. Through color gradients and reflective surfaces, Capellini constructs visual fields in which light and color interact.
Her work is deeply influenced by the principles of quantum physics, particularly the idea that reality, as energy, exists in a state of indefinite possibility until observed. Her paintings thus become symbolic representations of indeterminacy, where color emerges and dissolves, evoking the elusive nature of energy and consciousness.
As in the quantum vacuum, which is never an absolute void but a field full of energy fluctuations and virtual particles, the void in Capellini's works is never total. By removing painting, what remains is not nothingness but a new visual dimension in which traces, vibrations and latent presences emerge. This process of subtraction does not undo, but rather reveals, suggesting that every apparent absence is, in fact, a space of infinite potential.
