Cadogan is delighted to present “Der Himmel über Berlin”, a new exhibition by German artist Kim Bartelt.
In this new body of work, a sequence of geometric yet impossibly light forms hover in what appears to be a liminal space, both present and absent. The artist explores a sense of transition between spaces and suspended instances. This liminal condition is expressed through a distinctive formal language in which sheets of paper are applied to the canvas in geometric blocks. Semi-transparent, delicate tissue paper becomes a metaphor for transience, evoking the vulnerability of the moment and the impermanence of lived experience.
Conceived of in Kim’s studio, the tones and mood of the urban skyline, visible through the window in the distance, permeate throughout this new body of work. The viewer is invited to dwell in this space of transition, subtly informed by the pallet of the city, a threshold where materiality and feeling converge. Juxtaposed with the lightness of the paper, geometric architectural forms convey stability. These structures attempt to preserve what is fleeting, giving form to the ephemeral.
