This group of paintings by Terrell James marked a new stage in her practice, with a stronger and more graphic use of line.

"The paintings Wayfarer, Blue Circus, and Alibi all have figures," Terrell James says, "which I imagine as colorful characters inhabiting each picture plane. In Wayfarer, the forms are launching and floating; in Blue Circus they are stolidly grounded; in Alibi, they are standing together at attention.

Defined shapes dominate these works. I perceive a rhythm, a lyrical movement in each piece. Line also plays a role in all three. Taken together, the paintings offer cues to a site of specific meaning, all to be explored as the group evolves in conversation. Saturation of color yields light throughout the work."

  • The works reflect both inner and outer landscapes, where the organic shapes suggest plants, animals, fossils, and glaciers. Her images emerge in an intuitive way, guided by the subconscious. Some paintings only fully come together at the end, revealing a sense of place shaped by memory and discovered through the viewer’s experience.

Colour is central to her practice. She creates original hues that bring light and depth to the surface through layering and subtle changes. Her open and imaginative approach encourages viewers to return and look again. Each encounter offers space for reflection and new meaning. Complex yet balanced, her paintings give the viewer freedom to see and feel in their own way.

James’s expressions of her ‘familiar obsessions’ flow automatically and intuitively from the subconscious as her works unfold. Other works only resolve once completed, evoking a sense of place not intentionally designed but introduced by subconscious memory and found through interaction with the viewer. All of these paintings draw on her wealth of reference points in nature and personal experience but also in art and poetry.
