Pastel shades and transparency: visit to the studio of the artist Kim Bartelt
Canvas in front of concrete: In Kim Bartelt's studio, art hangs and leans on all the walls - in several layers. The artist composes abstract worlds of color with tissue paper; from apricot to mint green to light blue. The color never seems quite tangible because Bartelt does not paint on the canvas, but layers tissue paper on top of each other. The artist has been collecting her material for two decades, and she brings the papers onto her canvases in abstract compositions.
Finding, arranging and sorting - it seems a bit as if Bartelt is doing a jigsaw puzzle, and in fact one of her series is called exactly that: “Puzzle”. The most recent works called “Raw”, on the other hand, play with the basic principle: instead of normal canvas, Kim Bartelt uses fabrics made of raw linen and jute - again based on the principle of layering.
