This catalogue accompanies Adelheid’s De Witte’s first solo exhibition Any Wishes? at Cadogan Gallery in 2023. Adelheid De Witte’s way of working is characterised by an intuitive process, a quest in which the artist allows herself to be surprised by the rawness of her materials, the emptiness and an unpredictable jumble of movements. De Witte works layer by layer, with alternating dark and light paint applied, scratched, rubbed and reapplied. Line figures are imposed on top of this base, applied in one movement using different materials, from pastel and chalk to crayon and charcoal. In Any Wishes? The artist explores the fascinating world of the human subconscious. By recalling the Lacanian theory of the psyche, she creates separate but interacting systems that, combined, give life to a parallel dreamlike universe.
The catalogue is presented with an introduction written by Francesca Marcaccio, who investigates De Witte’s unique artistic practice and her inspirations through a conversation with the artist.
