Catalogue
This catalogue accompanies Deborah Tarr's 2025 exhibition, "Rare Earth". In this contemplative body of work, rocks and mountains emerge as both resolutely physical and abstracted forms. Through a poised interplay of figuration and abstraction, Tarr reduces the landscape to line and shape—yet the earth remains tangibly present and palpably alive. Her compositions possess a quiet gravity; organic forms appear at once essential and timeless, imbued with a quiet, restorative force.
These new works extend far beyond the purely aesthetic. Mountains assert themselves with a rugged, unyielding presence; oceans stretch deep into unknowable depths. Drawing from elemental forces—the shifting weather, lunar rhythms, the ceaseless motion of the sea—Tarr renders the natural world as it truly is: turbulent, powerful, and alive. Yet within this wildness lies a deep sense of stillness. Her brushstrokes are deliberate, her compositions finely attuned, evoking a meditative calm amidst the grittiness of the wild landscapes. Like the land itself, Tarr’s paintings pulse with a living, elemental energy.
