This catalogue accompanied Elise Ansel's ninth solo exhibition, "wall, window, table, light". In this body of work, Ansel extends her signature practice of translating Old Master painting into a contemporary visual language, focusing on Vermeer’s images of women near windows, immersed in light. Through these works, Ansel explores the relationship between light, perception and the materiality of painting.

The exhibition title refers both to the visible subject matter of Vermeer’s paintings and to the tension between the contemporary concept of painting as a tangible object, self-contained in its wall-like flat materiality, and the early modern idea of painting as a window or portal into illusory space.
