Andreas Diaz Andersson: ENTRE
A solo exhibition of new work by Mexican-Swedish artist Andreas Diaz Andersson.
The artist's minimalist abstractions, created using cotton thread woven into canvas, are defined as much by his harmonious use of lines and colour as by the negative space on the canvas. 'Entre' meaning 'between' in Spanish, explores this notion to its fullest extent. Made with exceptional precision and a meticulous attention to detail, his works are an exploration of depth and form, hovering between illusion and abstraction. The spaces left better each thread allow the composition to take shape with a spatially reflective quality. A constant variation of dynamic geometric patterns and deep vanishing points play with perception, fluctuating as the viewer sees the work from different angles.
Diaz Andersson is in a sense between two worlds himself. The influence of his upbringing first in Sweden and then in Mexico is evident in the work. Scandinavian order and organisation define his technique. The colours and textures evoke a Mexican sense of warmth and materiality. Both countries had a deep history of textile art, but it is a synthesis between two very different cultures that Andreas so successfully expresses.
