Overview

Marco Bizzarri (Santiago, 1988) is a Chilean artist based in West Sussex, UK. His practice explores memory, the passage of time, and the tension between decay and endurance, often through the lens of rural landscapes and abandoned spaces. Drawing primarily from his explorations in the Atacama Desert, Bizzarri intertwines elements from his daily life with the remnants and traces he encounters in these desolate, industrial, and rural environments. The act of walking, discovering, and documenting these remote sites plays a crucial role in his creative process, as does his attention to the marks left by human presence—whether through physical remnants or subtle, atmospheric traces.

Bizzarri’s paintings confront challenges of composition and colour, focusing on the dynamic interplay between light and space. Light in his work acts as both a revealing and concealing force: it illuminates while simultaneously obscuring, generating a tension between the visible and the hidden. This duality creates a feeling of suspension, as if the viewer is observing particles floating in the air. Using layers of splattered paint and carefully rendered lines, Bizzarri merges abstraction with figuration, crafting compositions that evoke a sense of ambiguity and nostalgia.
